The four outer prongs similarly emerge from the mouths of makaras and unite with the central prong just below its tip. These four makaras symbolize the four immeasurables; the four doors of liberation; the conquest of the four maras; the four activities; the four joys; the four cardinal directions; and the four purified elements of earth, water, fire, and air. The five upper prongs represent the enlightened wisdom qualities of the Five Buddhas, which arise from the five transmuted poisons and the five purified aggregates. The four outer prongs curve inwards to unite with the central prong, which symbolizes that the four aggregates of form, feeling, perception, and volition depend upon, or arise from, the fifth aggregate of consciousness. The five lower prongs represent the 'Five Mothers' or female consorts of the Five Buddhas, and symbolize the five purified elements of earth, water, fire, air, and space. These five upper and lower prongs also represent the five sen¬sory perceptions and the five sense organs.
