White Jade Buddha , Chiang Sean Buddha Chiang Sean located in the North of Lanna Thai Kingdom (present day Northern Thailand). Chiang Sean art or Lanna art is not as well known as Sukhothai but its style is unique and appealing.

An early Lanna image gives the impression of strength and virility. It is seated with legs overlapped in yogic position and the hands are in the gesture of subduing Mara (Virasana and the Bhumisparsa mudra) usually interpreted as the Buddha calling the earth to witness his good deeds in front of Mara.

A narrow waistline offsets an inflated torso. Large curls and a prominent hairline frame a round, fleshy face. The garment covers the left shoulder with a short flap ending above the left nipple. The later lanna Buddha takes on a slimmer body, has oval face and the flap of the garment ends above the waistline.

History of Bhumisparsa mudra

Mara, lord of the realm of desire and, in Buddhist mythology, a personification of evil. This legend tells that Mara was determined to foil Siddhartha's attempt to cast away human weaknesses such as greed, anger, and ignorance, which Mara uses to dominate sentient beings. First, Mara sent his three voluptuous daughters to tempt Siddhartha with sensual pleasures and material riches. Siddhartha ignored them. Mara then conjured up an army of demons, warriors, and ferocious beasts to attack Siddhartha and destroy his concentration, but they fell back, powerless against him. When Mara's tactics had all failed, as a final resort he announced that Siddhartha's efforts were in vain because no one had witnessed them, no one could give testament that Siddhartha had demonstrated the spiritual purity and supreme wisdom needed to defeat Mara and gain enlightenment. Siddhartha, still seated calmly and resolutely in meditation, extended his right hand out over the top of his right leg, palm against the knee, and touched the ground with his fingers to call the Goddess of the Earth to be his witness. The ground shook. The Earth Goddess emerged and affirmed that Siddhartha had conquered Mara and his defilements.

This event, particularly touching the ground with the fingers of his outstretched right hand to summon the Earth Goddess as his witness (bhumisparsha mudra), symbolizes Prince Siddhartha Gautama achieving enlightenment and becoming the Buddha, or Sakyamuni Buddha. He is also called Gautama Buddha. Known by various descriptive titles such as "The Enlightenment of Sakyamuni Buddha," "Buddha Calling the Earth To Witness," and "Buddha Subduing Mara," this pose has become Buddhism's principal icon

This White Jade Buddha is suitable for adoring.
