Ganesha, the most widely worshipped god in the Hindu pantheon, adored by Hindus, Buddhists and Jainists alike. The elephant headed god appears in India before even Shiva, and is a bringer of good fortune and wisdom, a remover of obstacles who is called upon at the beginning of a journey or a new venture. He is also the protector of knowledge, books and education.
Ganesha, is one of the most widely revered gods of Hinduism, not only in India. A powerful god, he is also a humble one, available to all classes of people, and to the virtuous and sinneres alike. With his large ears he listens to the prayers of the mighty and the lowly without distinction.
Ganesha, is easy to worship. He does not demand ritual purity or the service of Brahmins. Anyone can worship him with fruit, sugar cane and flowers and, of course, the sweets he dotes on. In many way he is a child, like the Ninyo of the Latin Catholics, and indeed in South India he is called Pullaiyar, the Infant. Unlike most forms of god he is also numerous, with his ridiculous elephant's head, fat baby's body, riding on a mouse, and he loves to dance, not necessarily to crush a demon or to create or destroy the universe, but simply for fun.
At one level, Ganesha is very like Santa Claus. Fat and jolly, with a red face and white body, he is the life-giving Sun who comes riding on the rain-giving clouds, with gifts for all.
This sculpture represents Ganesha, a short, potbellied, male Hindu deity with four arms and the head of an elephant. Ganesha is standing erect with broad shoulders on a lotus throne, holding one of his four attributes in each of his four arms. In Ganeshas upper right arm, he holds a trisula; in his lower right arm he holds his own tusk which, in a fit of anger, he yanked off, hurled at the moon, and caught; in his upper left arm he holds a lasso, which captures evil. These suggest that Ganesha is strong and fights evil. In his lower left arm, Ganesha holds sweets, which people tend to give him as offerings. Ganesha wear gorgeous Thai original plant. Ganeshas upright posture and attributes that convey a sense of security contribute to the sense of heroism that he exudes.
Since the fifth century CE, Indian artists have created several sculptures of Ganesha which all had religious purposes. Ganesha has been sculpted in various positions, each complementing the function the sculptor intended the Ganesha to have. In the Chola period in Tamil Nadu, many Hindu temples were built, many of which had been decorated with statues of Ganesha. Sculptures of Ganesha are not only used as decoration in Hindu kingdoms and temples, but some were also used as votive figures and were carried in religious processions.
